Wiring and Controls - Phase 6
Control Systems

The layout started with the Lionel TMCC control system but I had a lot of problems with the PowerMaster Flaking out, even after returning it to Lionel for a new one. The Control system has been changed to the MTH DCS system. This system is running all my TMCC and PS2 engines perfectly and I am very pleased with it. I had to upgrade the TUI and Handheld software as well as add the resister in the TIU/TMCC cable but after that it worked great.

Davis Electronics & Trains did the software upgrade as well as the upgrades to the TIU/TMCC cable.

I have been testing with different types of wire on the layout and for a normal, conventional engine, layout the Atlas 20 gauge (red/black) layout wire works great. If you are planning to use TMCC or DCS or both, like I am, I found a digital signal 16 gauge wire works best. I am using a wire from Atlas Wire & Cable, not to be confused with Atlas O gauge, which is a 16 gauge paired wire (red/black) encased in a outer shell, digital signal rated. It is actually speaker wire that is symphony rated. You can see from the above image that I have the Lionel Command base connected to the MTH TIU and both my power supplies are Lionel Power Houses, one is 180 watts the other being 135 watts. I have also added a ZW 270 watt Lionel power supply to this that is not shown in the above picture.

There is a specific order the layout construction needs to follow and I am learning as I go. I sat back and thought about this and figured that I needed to create and install my control board and the final resting place for my power supplies, for wiring reasons. I created the power supply support stand and control board. Version A of the Control Board is without the Operating building (Gas Station and Fire Station) Control buttons. Version B has these control buttons and all the wired switches. Version A of the Control Board wiring does not have the two power wires for each switch nor does it have the wires for the operating building. Version B has all the power wires and has been cleaned up, I combined all the wires together with black electrically tape. I also got a picture of some of the under table wiring, there is a lot more but this is what you see if you sit on the floor at my control board (Blue is track power, black is always common and everything else is accessory or switch power).
